Why a load rated lifting carabiner matters

Lifting gear and fall protection gear are rated differently, and the difference matters. Fall protection connectors are marked with a breaking strength in kilonewtons (kN). Lifting gear carries a working load limit (WLL), a rated capacity with a safety factor built in for lifting service. A lifting carabiner is a connector rated for lifting duty, so you can use it to raise, lower and suspend loads with a rating you can actually work to. If you are lifting with a carabiner, use one rated for lifting. It is that simple.

How to choose the right lifting carabiner for you

  1. Check the WLL. Match the working load limit to your load with margin. The lifting rating is what matters, not the size of the carabiner.
  2. Lifting or life-safety. Lifting duty and fall protection duty are rated differently. If the connector does both jobs on your site, confirm it carries the right rating for each.
  3. Gate and shape. A locking gate keeps the connection secure during the lift. Choose a shape that loads the spine, not the gate.
  4. Match the system. The carabiner has to suit the sling, the anchor and how the load hangs. Choose it as part of the lift, not on its own.
