Confined Space Entry and Rescue Equipment

Confined space work is not just about getting a worker in. You also need a safe way to monitor them, retrieve them and recover them if something goes wrong.

That is why most confined space jobs need more than one piece of equipment. A basic setup may include a tripod, winch, harness and gas detector. More difficult entries may need a davit or a more specific rescue setup.

How to Choose the Right Confined Space Equipment

Start with the space itself.

A tank, pit, shaft or manhole can all need different gear. Opening size, depth, internal obstructions and access angle all affect how the worker gets in, works and gets out.

Then look at the entry method.

For vertical entry, a tripod or davit with a winch or retrieval device is often the starting point. For side entry or offset access, that may not be enough on its own.

Think about recovery before entry starts.

You need to know whether there is enough clearance above the opening, whether the worker can be recovered cleanly without fouling on the structure, and whether the anchorage arrangement suits the load path. If the recovery path does not work, the setup is wrong.

Look at the hazards inside the space.

If there is any atmospheric risk, gas detection and ongoing monitoring need to be part of the plan. If the space is narrow, deep or obstructed, that can change the harness choice, retrieval method and rescue setup.

Make sure the gear works as one system.

Tripods, davits, winches, harnesses, gas detectors and rescue components should not be chosen one by one with no clear plan behind them. Access, monitoring, attachment, retrieval and rescue all need to line up.

FAQs About Confined Space Equipment

What is confined space equipment?

Confined space equipment is the gear used to get in, work safely and get a worker back out if something goes wrong.

That can include tripods, winches, retrieval systems, gas detectors, harnesses and rescue gear. What you need depends on the space, the entry method and the rescue plan.

What equipment is needed for confined space entry?

That depends on the space and how the entry is being done.

A basic setup may include access equipment, a harness, retrieval gear and gas detection. If rescue would be difficult, you may also need a more complete rescue system ready to go before entry starts.

What is confined space rescue equipment?

Confined space rescue equipment is the gear used to recover a worker from the space if there is an incident.

That may include a tripod, winch, retrieval system, harness and other rescue components. The right setup depends on the depth of the space, the access point and how the recovery would actually happen.

Do I need gas detection for confined space work?

In many confined space jobs, yes. If atmospheric hazards are part of the risk, gas detection needs to be part of the setup before entry and during the work. It is not something to think about after the fact.

Are tripods and winches used for confined space entry?

Yes. Tripods and winches are commonly used for vertical confined space entry and retrieval.

They are often used for pits, shafts, tanks and manholes where a worker may need to be lowered in and recovered out through the same opening.

What is the difference between confined space entry equipment and rescue equipment?

Entry equipment is what helps the worker get in, do the job and get out under normal conditions.

Rescue equipment is what you rely on when something has gone wrong and the worker needs to be recovered. Most confined space jobs need both thought through properly before work starts.

How do I choose the right confined space setup?

Start with the space. A tank, pit, shaft or manhole can all need different gear. The right setup depends on the access point, the hazards, the retrieval method and the rescue plan, not just what fits in the budget.
