FAQs About Rope Access and Rescue Harnesses
What type of harness is suitable for rope access?
A rope access harness or suspension harness is the suitable type of harness for rope access work.
It needs to support prolonged suspension, provide the right attachment points for vertical movement and carry gear in a way that still works once the user is on rope. A basic fall arrest harness on its own is usually not enough.
How do I read rope access harness codes and standards?
Start with the harness type, then the features, then the certification.
The model name usually tells you the harness family, while terms like Fast, Speed or Triple Lock often point to buckle or connector style. What matters more is whether the harness has the right layout for rope work, such as front and ventral attachment points, suspension support, gear loops and work seat compatibility where needed.
For Australian compliance, the fall arrest side usually sits under the AS/NZS 1891 series, while industrial rope access selection and use sits under AS/NZS 4488.2. Always check the product card or manual for the practical details: date of manufacture, serial or batch traceability, maximum service life, inspection requirements and the intended use of the harness. Those details matter because a harness can meet a standard and still be the wrong harness for rope access if it is really designed as a simpler fall-arrest harness.
