Why an oval carabiner matters

Shape decides how a carabiner carries its load. An oval's symmetric shape centres whatever it holds, instead of shifting it toward the spine like a D shape does. That is exactly what you want under pulleys, ascenders, rope jammers and rigging plates, where an off-centre load makes gear sit crooked and wear unevenly. It also lets the carabiner be loaded either way up, which keeps rigging simple.

4. Size and rating. Check the gate opening fits the hardware and the kN rating suits the system.
