Choosing the Right Safety Harness for the Job
Not every harness is built for the same kind of work. The right choice depends on how the harness will be used, the attachment points required, and how long the user may be wearing it on site.
Some jobs only call for basic fall arrest protection. Others need side D-rings for work positioning, or ventral attachment points and added support for rope access and rescue work. Choosing the right harness is about more than comfort. It is a key part of building a safe and compliant system for working at height.
At Height Dynamics, we help customers choose harnesses based on the application, site conditions, and the rest of the equipment being used with the system.
Types of Height Safety Harnesses We Supply
Our range includes harnesses suited to a wide variety of working at height tasks.
- Fall arrest harnesses for stopping a fall in line with personal fall protection systems
- Fall restraint harnesses for setups designed to prevent workers from reaching a fall edge
- Work positioning harnesses with side attachment points for supported hands-free work
- Rope access harnesses for suspension, vertical movement, and prolonged use
- Rescue and multi-purpose harnesses for more specialised industrial applications
If you are unsure which harness suits your application, our team can help you narrow down the right option.
What to Consider When Buying a Safety Harness
- Type of work. Fall arrest, restraint, positioning, rope access, and rescue all have different harness requirements.
- Attachment points. Different tasks may need dorsal, sternal, ventral, or side attachment points.
- Comfort for time on task. Padding, adjustability, and fit matter more when harnesses are worn for long periods.
- Compatibility. The harness needs to work with your lanyards, inertia reels, rope access hardware, and rescue equipment.
- Inspection and lifespan. Harnesses should be inspected regularly and retired in line with the manufacturer’s instructions, site requirements, and a proper harness and equipment inspection process.
A harness should suit both the worker and the work being performed. Getting that right helps improve safety, usability, and confidence on site.
Safety Harness FAQs
What type of harness is suitable for rope access?
For rope access work, a full body harness with sit capability is required. This is often called a rope access harness or work positioning harness.
Key features to look for include front and ventral attachment points for ascenders and descenders, side D-rings for work positioning, comfortable padding for long suspension periods, and compatibility with a chest harness or integrated upper body support.
A basic fall arrest harness is not suitable on its own. Rope access work involves suspension and positioning, not only fall protection.
What are the 3 main types of harnesses?
Safety harnesses are generally grouped into three main types based on their function.
Fall arrest harnesses are designed to stop a fall and include a dorsal D-ring on the back. Work positioning harnesses still have fall arrest attachment points with the addition of side D-rings. Used in conjunction with work position lanyard they will support a worker in place while working hands-free. Rope access or rescue harnesses are built for vertical access work and include a ventral attachment point for greater comfort during prolonged suspension.
Many modern harnesses combine these functions into one unit.
What is the life expectancy of a rope access harness?
The lifespan of a rope access harness depends on usage, storage conditions, exposure to UV, chemicals, and the manufacturer’s instructions.
To meet the current Australian Standard, the maximum lifespan is 10 years from the date of manufacture, but heavy use or harsh environments can reduce this significantly. In active rope access work, some harnesses may only remain serviceable for 2 to 5 years.
Condition matters more than age alone. A harness should only stay in service if it passes inspection and remains within the manufacturer’s stated limits.
When should a harness be replaced?
A harness should be replaced immediately if it has been involved in a fall, fails inspection, or shows signs of wear or damage.
This includes cuts, fraying, damaged stitching, heat damage, chemical exposure, UV degradation, cracked hardware, corrosion, or missing identification labels.
It should also be retired once it reaches the manufacturer’s maximum lifespan, even if no obvious damage is visible.
How do you know if a harness should not be used?
A harness is no longer safe if inspection reveals any structural damage, wear, or degradation.
Common warning signs include frayed webbing, cuts, burns, glazing, loose stitching, stiff or brittle straps, rust on hardware, cracks, or buckles that do not lock properly.
If there is any doubt about the condition of a harness, it should be removed from service and assessed by a competent person.
