Safety Harness FAQs

What type of harness is suitable for rope access?

For rope access work, a full body harness with sit capability is required. This is often called a rope access harness or work positioning harness.

Key features to look for include front and ventral attachment points for ascenders and descenders, side D-rings for work positioning, comfortable padding for long suspension periods, and compatibility with a chest harness or integrated upper body support.

A basic fall arrest harness is not suitable on its own. Rope access work involves suspension and positioning, not only fall protection.

What are the 3 main types of harnesses?

Safety harnesses are generally grouped into three main types based on their function.

Fall arrest harnesses are designed to stop a fall and include a dorsal D-ring on the back. Work positioning harnesses still have fall arrest attachment points with the addition of side D-rings. Used in conjunction with work position lanyard they will support a worker in place while working hands-free. Rope access or rescue harnesses are built for vertical access work and include a ventral attachment point for greater comfort during prolonged suspension.

Many modern harnesses combine these functions into one unit.

What is the life expectancy of a rope access harness?

The lifespan of a rope access harness depends on usage, storage conditions, exposure to UV, chemicals, and the manufacturer’s instructions.

To meet the current Australian Standard, the maximum lifespan is 10 years from the date of manufacture, but heavy use or harsh environments can reduce this significantly. In active rope access work, some harnesses may only remain serviceable for 2 to 5 years.

Condition matters more than age alone. A harness should only stay in service if it passes inspection and remains within the manufacturer’s stated limits.

When should a harness be replaced?

A harness should be replaced immediately if it has been involved in a fall, fails inspection, or shows signs of wear or damage.

This includes cuts, fraying, damaged stitching, heat damage, chemical exposure, UV degradation, cracked hardware, corrosion, or missing identification labels.

It should also be retired once it reaches the manufacturer’s maximum lifespan, even if no obvious damage is visible.

How do you know if a harness should not be used?

A harness is no longer safe if inspection reveals any structural damage, wear, or degradation.

Common warning signs include frayed webbing, cuts, burns, glazing, loose stitching, stiff or brittle straps, rust on hardware, cracks, or buckles that do not lock properly.

If there is any doubt about the condition of a harness, it should be removed from service and assessed by a competent person.
