Choosing the Right Davit Arm for Your Site

The right davit arm depends on three things: the load rating you need, where it will be used, and how often it needs to move. For confined space rescue and personnel retrieval, you need a man-rated davit with the right base for the structure. For maintenance lifting only, a goods-rated davit may suit the task, but it cannot be used for personnel lifting, regardless of capacity.

Portable and mobile davit arms suit crews who move between sites or work across multiple access points. Permanent davit arms are better suited to fixed locations where the system stays in place. Davit arm bases are often installed separately so one arm can be used across multiple positions on the same site.

Davit Arm Systems for Confined Space, Rescue and Maintenance

Davit arms are widely used in confined space entry, rescue operations, maintenance work and other high-risk environments where controlled lifting, lowering and retrieval are required. They are a practical solution for teams working in pits, tanks, vaults, shafts, treatment plants and other difficult-access areas.

Portable, Mobile and Removable Davit Arm Options

One of the main advantages of a davit arm system is flexibility. Portable davit arms can be broken down and moved between jobs. Mobile davit arms suit sites where access points change. Removable systems are also useful where storage, transport or layout constraints matter.

For many sites, this makes more sense than installing a dedicated arm at every location. Multiple bases can be installed across the facility, allowing one or two davit arms to be rotated as needed.

FAQs about Davit Arms

What is a davit arm?

A davit arm is a lifting and retrieval arm mounted to a fixed or portable base, used to raise or lower people and equipment in confined space, rescue and access applications.

In industrial settings, davit arms are commonly paired with a rescue winch and full body harness for entry and retrieval tasks.

Are davit arms man-rated for personnel lifting?

Only davit arms specifically rated and certified for personnel lifting can be used on people.

Check the WLL marking and current certification before use. Goods-rated davits cannot be used for lowering or raising workers.

What is the difference between a portable davit arm and a permanent one?

Portable davit arms break down into components and can be moved between locations or between bases on the same site.

Permanent davit arms mount to a fixed base and stay in one location. Many sites use multiple bases and rotate one or two portable arms between them.

Do you sell davit arm bases separately?

Yes. Davit arm bases can be supplied separately so you can install multiple base types across a site and use the same arm in different locations.

This can be a more practical and cost-effective setup for larger facilities or changing work areas.
